Liberec - The project for the construction of a new Secondary Health School in Liberec will cost the Liberec Region 52 million crowns. It will be developed by the Liberec studio of Petr Stolín, which won the architectural competition. The costs for the actual construction of the school should not exceed 630 million crowns excluding VAT, said the outgoing deputy governor Zbyněk Miklík (Pirates) to ČTK today. The current building no longer meets the needs, and the school is expected to start teaching in the new premises on September 1, 2028.

The Liberec health school has been striving for a new building for several years. "It is located in a historic house from 1812 opposite St. Antonin's Church on Sokolovské Square, which belongs to the city of Liberec. We cannot accommodate our female students there, so they also study in other locations. The layout of the heritage-protected building does not allow for further development of the school. With the construction of new premises, we aim to satisfy the increasing demand for healthcare personnel. It also urgently needs new, modernly equipped specialized classrooms," added governor Martin Půta (Mayors for the Liberec Region).

According to the governor, healthcare personnel are key to maintaining not only hospital capacity but also primary care in the region. "When parents today are deciding where their children, primarily their daughters in the case of the secondary health school, will study, obviously how the school looks, what it is equipped with and what comfort it provides in education for both students and teachers, is one of the factors that influences that decision. That is why we want to go for a completely new school in a location near the Regional Hospital in Liberec and the tram to Jablonec, where we do not have a health school," added Půta.

The architectural-urban competition for the design of the school was announced by the region at the beginning of the year, receiving 27 proposals, with six advancing to the second round. The proposal by the studio of Petr Stolín won, and the region has now agreed with him to prepare the project documentation. The building will be in the so-called passive standard and will be located in the school campus in Jablonecká Street near the Broumovská housing estate, where the secondary vocational school currently operates. According to the governor, the land there provides ample space for further construction. The project is divided into two phases; the first will create the school and sports facilities, and the second will be a dormitory.

According to Půta, healthcare fields are a priority for the region, and he has also invested in the expansion of the health school in Turnov, where a center for vocational education focused on healthcare and social services was completed in September for more than 50 million crowns. The newly formed coalition of Mayors for the Liberec Region and Together for the Liberec Region - ODS, TOP 09, KDU-ČSL has also committed in their program declaration, signed by representatives of both groups last week at Ještěd, to support increasing the capacity of healthcare fields and the construction of a new healthcare school in Liberec.
