The aim of the urban planning and architectural competition was to find the best architectural solution for the hotel near the SNP Memorial. Contestants were required to express their opinions not only on the hotel building itself but also on the urban planning solution for the entire area. Banská Bystrica thus gained 72 expert perspectives on the arrangement of urban relationships in this area, which is dominated by the SNP Memorial. The challenging competition topic attracted the interest of renowned architectural studios. The competition involved prominent figures from the Slovak and Czech architectural scenes, as well as architects from Hungary, Canada, and Spain. The competition took place from March to September of this year as an anonymous and two-stage event. In the 1st round, 72 proposals were assessed, and 11 of them progressed to the 2nd round. The investor left the decision on the winning proposal to a professional jury composed of architects, which awarded 3 prizes and 1 mention. On September 22, 2010, the winning proposal from the studio of architects Martin Kusý and Pavol Paňák was presented to the public for the first time. The exhibition of competition proposals in the Pasáže Beniczky exhibition hall presents all competition proposals in graphic form, and the proposals from the second round of the competition are also displayed as three-dimensional models. During the opening of the exhibition on November 18, 2010, a festive awards ceremony took place with the participation of the judging panel and competition participants.
