Bruno Taut

Bruno Taut is among the most significant German architects of modernity and was also one of the early members of the Werkbund Berlin. His buildings in the housing estates of the 1920s in Berlin set architectural and urban planning standards for the 20th century. Although he did not excel in detail and singularity, his architecture achieved a unique effect in space. Through the "art of proportions" of building types for large estates and their placement in space, as well as by introducing the category of "outdoor living space," he reformed the existing way of living. The quality of Bruno Taut's architecture lies not only in the use of color to create space and working with it as an aesthetic building element but primarily in its social function, which he allowed to shine through. Thus, color became an empathetic expression of his buildings.
On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition September 1, 2015, at 6:00 PM, Dr. Berthold Franke (director of the Goethe Institute Prague), Winfried Brenne (exhibition architect), and Prof. Vladimír Šlapeta (architect and architectural theorist) will speak.
The exhibition will take place from September 2 to October 17, 2015, on the second floor of the Goethe Institute, Masarykovo nábřeží 32, Prague 1. Entrance to the exhibition is free. A guided tour will be held on October 2, 2015, as part of the celebration of "25 years of the Goethe Institute in Prague."
The exhibition has been prepared by the studio Brenne Architekten and Werkbund Berlin and is presented in Prague on the occasion of two anniversaries: 20 years of partnership between Prague and Berlin and 25 years of the Goethe Institute in the Czech Republic.
