The third exhibition of this year at the Stiassni Villa will present the life and work of one of the most remarkable figures of German architectural modernism in the first half of the 20th century, architect and urban planner Bruno Taut. The exhibition, which premiered last autumn at the Goethe Institute in Prague, will now also be reprised in Brno. Already, Taut's early work – the Garden City of Falkenberg – excellently encapsulates the main ideas of his creations, namely the human dimension of buildings, healthy living, the organic connection of urban development and landscape, and the use of unconventional combinations of vivid colors. His Glass Pavilion, presented to the public at the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne, became an iconic building of modernism. With his timeless ideas, Taut significantly contributed to the reform of housing in Germany. Evidence of this is more than 12,000 new apartments that were built in Berlin according to his designs over eight years. Four of his housing estates have even been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2008. Bruno Taut was also an active member of many artistic associations and state institutions, and he authored a number of theoretical publications. His connection to the Czech environment cannot be overlooked either. In the first half of the 1920s, he was in contact with Czech critic Bohumil Markalous and the magazine Bytová kultura, and a detail of the glass exhibition tower of the Brno exhibition center was even used for the frontispiece of Taut's book “Die neue Baukunst in Europa und Amerika”. The architect – a visionary who excelled in the use of incredible color combinations and a strong social sensibility, and whose architecture operates on the border of functionalism and expressionism, will be presented to the public in the Czech Republic in a comprehensive exhibition for only the second time. The exhibition was prepared by the Berlin studio Brenne Architekten and Werkbund Berlin and will be on display in the former kitchen of the Stiassni Villa from May 20 to June 26 during the villa's opening hours.
