The exhibition Dialogues in Time to a certain extent follows the first successful presentation of the exhibition New in the Old from ten years ago. The theme of contemporary architecture in a historical context is often presented as a conflict between architects and heritage conservationists. This simplification is unfortunately very misleading and in a certain sense hinders both sides from establishing a meaningful dialogue. The potential conflict does not arise between the new and the old, but between quality and poor quality. Architecture is an endless story that cannot be interrupted or even concluded. However, just as it is unreasonable to exclude new architecture from historical cities, architects cannot be relieved of their responsibility towards it. The only way to find meaningful solutions is through open dialogue.
Unlike the first exhibition, we do not present visitors with a long list of successful, but also unsuccessful projects, but this time we focus on a selection of thirty-five realized reconstructions, new buildings, and interventions in public space across the country, especially in recent years. The selection includes the recently awarded reconstructions of Helfštýn Castle, the reconstruction of Kocandy in Kravsko, the conversion of Silo Tower in Olomouc, the new headquarters of Lasvit in Nový Bor, parking houses in Dolní Břežany and Brno, and the mountain cable car station at Pustevny. Among the gallery and museum institutions will be, for example, the Archbishopric Museum in Olomouc, DOX gallery, the Jan Palach Memorial, the depository of the North Bohemian Scientific Library in Ústí nad Labem, Závodný Gallery in Mikulov, or Archaeopark Pavlov; among selected cultural and social buildings, there will be the reconstruction of the cafeteria of the 17th November UK dormitory or the South Bohemian Scientific Library in České Budějovice. Reconstructions, revitalizations, and new buildings in relation to the revitalization of public space will represent examples of projects in Zlín, Litomyšl, Ostrava, in Prague at the riverside and in Karlín, or in Brno at Kraví hora.
The second part of the project is a tribute to the recently deceased world-renowned architect Ricardo Bofill, who, as the first foreign architect in collaboration with Czech colleagues /architects, engineers, investors/ entered into a challenging dialogue with the genius loci of the historical backdrop of Prague. Their joint architectural transformations of the industrial landmarks of Karlín and other architectures of the capital significantly contributed to the discourse on the integration of contemporary architecture into a historical context. This contribution will also be presented within the framework of the debate and presentation of his Czech and foreign collaborators.
