The Emil Filly Gallery opens the international project curated by Eva Mráziková & Tomáš Petermann, Model World.
How does an architect think about space, and how does an artist express themselves through sculpture or installation? What does a house (a model of a house) mean for a sculptor and how does an architect approach it? Both address fundamental relationships, scale, but for different purposes. Currently, both areas can significantly overlap – artists often create site-specific installations in specific spaces and beyond gallery walls, while architects use various artistic techniques for visualizing their intentions.
Exhibiting: Ondřej Císler, Martin Dašek, Andrea Demek, Kristina and Jan Magasanik, Moradavaga, John Van Oers, o-r-a
Armaturka (Jateční 49, Ústí n/Labem) is open Tuesday to Friday 10 AM - 6 PM, Saturday 1 PM - 5 PM. Free admission on Wednesday.
You can find the entire program on the website and on Facebook.
The perception of urban, lived, or exhibition space is currently one of the prominent themes in visual culture. We are constantly confronted with virtual or simulated space, which we also perceive within the framework of digital interfaces. The real space around us is relativized by various influences, and we have different relationships with it – we care for it or are indifferent to it, using it merely; we try to perceive and cultivate it; we are fascinated by it; we co-create it. The space around us and its various variants and definitions also become material for further creative processes – within architecture or visual arts. We have noticed certain touchpoints, intersections, and boundary planes common to both areas, which have become the starting point for a multifaceted exhibition project. The selection of exhibitors attempts to capture a range of phenomena – thinking in terms of models, the inclusion of the form of sketches that serve as preparatory moments as well as standalone artifacts, realization through various types of visualizations that work with simulated environments or invite the simulation of situations through thinking. How does an architect think about space, and how does an artist express themselves through sculpture or installation? City, building, house, architectural system – these are today’s metaphors and meta-language for broader thinking about the phenomenon of space that surrounds us all. We think about it because we want to relate to it. We try to find our place, grapple with universal scales, and individualize them. We are sculptures to ourselves against the universe and create our own architectures of personal worlds. The city, as well as the natural space that surrounds us, creates not only our physical but, above all, our social consciousness and relationships. The exhibition presents artistic realizations that work with the language of architecture, with forms and models. On the other hand, architects (often artistic pairs) present themselves through inspirational archives, visual "comics" that bring us closer to the syntax of their thinking and working methods.
