Olomouc - The Museum of Art in Olomouc has been filled with the works of world-renowned Czech artist Magdalena Jetelová, who presents her monumental spatial and light realizations from 1982 to the present day. This is only Jetelová's third solo exhibition in the Czech Republic, specially tailored to the museum's Troljlodí spaces. The exhibition (Des)Orientation? will be open until the end of October.
"The exhibition in Olomouc maps the author's recent works. Visitors will see, in eight sections, a cross-section of her creation. Organizing a retrospective of Magdalena Jetelová is practically impossible. We gave the author free rein; she works with the space of the museum's exhibition halls," said the museum director Michal Soukup to journalists today.
The exhibition project in the Museum of Art showcases her ingenious work with space and its perception, as the author blurs the boundaries between the original and the built-in interior of the museum. She shifted the entrance spaces of the exhibition space Trojlodí by 30 degrees, thus putting them in motion, while the built-in structure consistently duplicates the entrance space. The author also played with time; when entering between the inclined walls, visitors will hear their own voices spoken a few minutes earlier at the ticket office when buying tickets.
In the main part of the exhibition, visitors will encounter large-format mirrored walls. The dynamics of special films dissolve the outlines of reality into an unreal reflection. The visitor thus completely gains a feeling of disorientation. They can only lean on short messages on the walls, which remain the only calm elements. "I work with films that have been researched for a few years and can transfer energy," Jetelová told journalists today. The name of the exhibition itself also points to the apparent feeling of disorientation. "I hope it will really affect visitors this way," added the author.
The exhibition also includes the artist's laser drawings, smoke paintings, and a plaster model from 1982, Underground City, which the author designed in opposition to the unified housing development of the Jižní Město. The entrance to the exhibition halls features a spatial installation titled Crime Scenes, where visitors can read enlargements of StB documents under their feet, demonstrating the subtle practices of manipulation with a sophisticated strategy of spreading disinformation.
Besides wooden objects and plaster sculptures, Jetelová particularly attracted attention with her chairs and stairs from the early 1980s, which uniquely brought to life the reality of living under the communist regime. The 67-year-old author has created challenging spatial installations in many prestigious museums and galleries in Europe, the United States, and Japan.
The exhibition will be open at the Museum of Modern Art in Olomouc until October 27.
