Max Berg

Brno - Visitors to the Museum of the City of Brno at Špilberk Castle can become acquainted with the work of the famous German architect Max Berg starting Thursday. The new exhibition focuses primarily on his most famous building, the Centennial Hall in Wrocław, which became the 13th Polish landmark inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List last year. Other works by Berg, along with creations by his students and successors, are also on display, said Michaela Budíková from the museum's promotion department to CTK.
Berg, who lived from 1870 to 1947, was the chief architect of the city of Wrocław for more than 15 years, at that time one of the most important industrial and commercial centers in Germany. He significantly contributed to changing the face of the city. He promoted pioneering architectural and urban planning directions. According to experts, his projects are functional, simple, and impressive. He was not fond of ornaments and made extensive use of reinforced concrete, skeletal structures, and prefabricated elements.
The highlight of Berg's work became the Centennial Hall, built from 1910 to 1913 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig, one of the milestones of the Napoleonic Wars. The monumental arena with a dome and impressive vaulting was the largest building of its kind. It was intended for grand musical or theatrical productions and could accommodate up to 10,000 people.
The Brno exhibition, which will run until November 4, presents the Centennial Hall through architectural studies, plans, models, and photographs from the time of its construction as well as from the present day. Other exhibits relate to the Wrocław exhibition grounds.
