Brno - The mayor of Brno-north, Leo Venclík, intends to relocate some defaulters and disruptive tenants of this district into a new building. As some media have reported earlier, the building is expected to be constructed on Vranovská Street near the center of Brno. A caretaker would oversee the lives of families whose children often do not attend school, who do not pay rent, or who damage the interiors of apartments. If people disrespected the established rules, they would be evicted from the apartment, Venclík told journalists today. The politician wants to address the situation in the district, which has been struggling with defaulters for a long time. Many of the disruptive residents are Roma; according to Venclík, there are about 5,000 of them living in Brno-north. To ensure adherence to the rules, the mayor plans to pressure disruptive residents by threatening them with immediate eviction for violations. The contract would, for example, require residents to agree to pay rent on time, cover any damages to the apartment interiors, and send their children to school. They would only be able to access their apartments through a reception that would monitor tenant visits. Any conflicts would be handled by the city police, which could have its station in the building, Venclík stated. The mayor wants to build a house with about 80 apartments on the site where three buildings currently stand, which are in poor technical condition. These would need to be demolished. The construction is estimated to cost about 130 million crowns, and the municipal district will negotiate whether Brno would cover most of the investment. "They promised us support," Venclík said after a meeting with his colleague and Brno's deputy mayor, Oliver Pospíšil. The mayor is not worried that there would be no interest in living in a house with strict rules. According to him, many tenants complain that they do not live well under the current conditions. "We take it as an opportunity for the families of defaulters and problematic residents who destroy apartments, the last chance we will give them," the mayor added.
