America tends to favor icons over monuments. Among the most impressive symbols of the western coast of the USA undoubtedly is the 1,300-meter-long Golden Gate Bridge in northern San Francisco. Nearby, according to a design by the Snøhetta studio, a modern sports arena for the local basketball team, the Golden State Warriors, is set to arise. Snøhetta, currently the most renowned Norwegian architectural firm, has been gaining increasingly prestigious projects since establishing its New York branch. Recently, they presented their vision for the expansion of the famous SFMoMA gallery in the heart of San Francisco. The stadium, located in the shadow of the legendary bridge, will join the ranks of the city's unmissable symbols upon its completion in 2017. The project, which sees Snøhetta collaborating with the architectural branch of the giant AECOM, completely redesigns the marine bay and urban waterfront. In addition to the sports sanctuary, the new complex offers entertainment and commercial spaces. The hall, resembling a giant hockey puck, is neatly wrapped in a shiny ribbon of metallic cladding and set into greenery along the coast. The sports and entertainment park, covering nearly seven hectares, will be accessible not just by car but also by boat. Compared to the previous version, city residents will have access to a much larger amount of outdoor public space and easier access to the water surface. The sports arena, which will hold 18,000 spectators, will also serve as a venue for music and other cultural performances.
