Lesley Lokko

On Tuesday, December 14, 2021, the board of the Venetian Biennale announced that, upon the recommendation of President Roberto Cicutto, it appointed Ghanaian-Scottish architect Lesley Lokko as the chief curator of the 18th International Architecture Biennale in Venice, which will take place from May 20 to November 26, 2023.
Cicutto justified his selection: “The seventeenth international architecture exhibition has perhaps definitively confirmed the need to present this discipline in close connection with the general needs of humanity and the planet. The curators of the international biennale have always sought to provide the most comprehensive overview of topics and projects that will be useful in addressing future scenarios through the vision of the participants they invited. The appointment of Lesley Lokko as curator of the 18th architecture biennale is a way to gain the perspective of an internationally recognized figure who can interpret her own position in the current debate on architecture and urbanism through various roles. Moreover, Lesley Lokko has her own rich experience with a continent that is increasingly becoming a laboratory for architectural experiments and designs for the whole of today’s world. I believe that immersing oneself in this reality is the best way to build upon the questions raised by this year’s biennale under curator Hashim Sarkis.”
The newly appointed curator Lesley Lokko expressed herself with the following words: “A new world order is emerging with new centers producing and controlling knowledge. New audiences are also appearing, hungry for diverse narratives, distinct tools, and languages that shape space and place. After two of the most challenging and divisive years that we all vividly remember, architects have a unique opportunity to show the world what we do best: present ambitious and creative ideas that help us envision a fairer and more optimistic common future. I speak to you from the youngest continent in the world, and I would like to thank President Cicutto and the entire team of the Venetian biennale for this bold choice.”
The Czech audience had the opportunity to get better acquainted with Lesley Lokko during last year's lecture series November Talks.
