In mid-January, everything indicated that this year's Serpentine Gallery pavilion would be built by the German architect Frei Otto, who decided not to collaborate with the traditional engineering firm Arup. The gallery ultimately decided to give Otto "one more year" and a month ago, a substitute was announced, which became the Berlin artist Olafur Eliasson along with the Norwegian architect Kjetil Thorsen from the studio Snøhetta.
Now, images of the planned pavilion have finally been released. The circular building features a spiraling ramp that leads up to the roof. The façade of the ramp consists of twisted slats. Depending on the observer's angle of view, the appearance of the façade will also change. The collaboration between the architect and the artist in designing the summer pavilion Serpentine Gallery was initiated last year by Rem Koolhaas, who invited the German photographer Thomas Demand.
