The spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois could break the record at auction

New York – One of the most famous works of modern sculpture, the Spider sculpture by American Louise Bourgeois, may break the record for the most expensive piece by a female artist in the upcoming auction in New York. This was reported by The Art Newspaper. Sotheby's auction house estimates its price at 30 to 40 million dollars (639 to 852 million crowns), and it will be auctioned on May 18th.

The bronze sculpture from 1996, standing three meters tall, is one piece from a larger series. Another spider sculpture sold at a Christie's auction in 2019 for 28 million dollars (596 million crowns). The record for the most expensive work by the artist sold at auction is currently held by Georgia O'Keeffe's painting Durman, which sold in 2014 for 44.4 million dollars (945 million crowns).

American sculptor of French origin Louise Bourgeois is considered one of the key figures of feminist art and has also exhibited in the Czech Republic. She died in 2010 at the age of 98.
