Karlovy Vary - The Eltodo company has requested a zoning decision for the reconstruction and extension of the National House in Karlovy Vary. This was enabled, among other things, by the approval of the National Heritage Institute. It has assessed the second version of the architectural study after having objections to the first version. The next step in preparing the modernization of the former Art Nouveau hotel National House will now be the submission of documentation for the building permit. Jan Rafaj, spokesperson for Eltodo, reported this today. The chief designer has adjusted the architectural study after the objections from the heritage protectors. The heritage institute stated that the assessed proposal can be evaluated as complete and of high quality, executed entirely contemporaneously, yet contextually embedded within the architectural-historical expression and development of Karlovy Vary's architecture, noted the spokesperson. "The second variant did not change the internal arrangement of the building. The first two above-ground floors will serve as a shopping center smoothly connecting to the pedestrian zone of Zeyerova and Varšavská streets. The larger part of the extension, that is, five floors, will serve the needs of the hotel. In this new part of the hotel, 125 out of a total of 200 rooms will be located," Rafaj stated. The next step in the preparation for the reconstruction and extension of the National House hotel will be the submission of documentation for the building permit. "According to the schedule, Eltodo will do so no later than nine months after the zoning decision becomes legally binding," the spokesperson for Eltodo said. Eltodo Praha, which paid the city approximately 21 million crowns for the National House, intends to transform it into a multifunctional facility. Construction is likely to begin during the next year, but no later than September, and is expected to be completed according to the proposed plan by spring 2009. Reconstruction costs are estimated at about 700 million crowns. The Karlovy Vary city hall has tried to sell the dilapidated National House several times in the past. However, no one was interested in the property, which has been closed for 14 years. Therefore, the city hall reduced the price from the original 42 million crowns to approximately 21 million crowns. The Eltodo company was selected last year in a tender from two interested parties.
