Tokyo - The Japanese company Sumitomo Forestry plans to build the world's tallest wooden skyscraper to commemorate its 350th anniversary. It is set to rise in Tokyo by 2041. The company plans to use 180,000 cubic meters of wood for the construction of the 70-story building, reported the BBC news site today. The skyscraper will include not only apartments but also hotels, shops, and offices.
The magnificent building, named W350, is expected to reach a height of 350 meters, with the foundation comprised of only ten percent steel. The structure will be designed to protect the skyscraper from earthquakes, which are relatively common in Tokyo. The entire interior, spanning 455,000 square meters, will also be planned to be made of wood.
The construction costs are estimated at 600 billion yen (115 billion CZK), which is up to twice the cost of a traditional skyscraper of the same height. However, the company anticipates that due to technological advancements, the costs will be lower by the time of completion.
Currently, the tallest wooden skyscraper in the world is a student residence in Vancouver, Canada, which stands at 53 meters, reported the British newspaper The Guardian.
