On the occasion of the establishment of the Architectural Institute in Prague, the editorial team of Archiweb posed a survey question to selected personalities of the Czech scene. We publish the responses received in alphabetical order.

What do you think the establishment of the Architectural Institute in Prague (ARCHIP) will mean?

For me, Archip is a memory of Martin Roubík, a product of the Velvet Revolution, proof of freedom, a fresh wind, evidence that a revolutionary generation has emerged in our profession. Of course, I like the idea of teaching architecture in a broad cultural context, its anchoring among other humanitarian fields, the openness of the language environment, international involvement, young, tireless, unwearied, unbent people in leadership... etc. What moved me most was the notion that something from the forgotten ideas of a school from '89, as we naively dreamed of it, has been realized: an open school, a global school, a school where the educator is neither a judge nor an administrator nor a career diplomat - but rather a wiser colleague, an institution without bureaucrats, a platform where the first and last themes are the search and discovery of architecture, the joy of creation... However, all of this took longer than I thought. Twenty years. And another twenty years will likely pass before the first students of ARCHIP see the results of their work in practice. Therefore, I wish them great perseverance.

I don't know if it will mean anything; I think time will answer that. Just the amount of tuition will be a significant limit, so I wish ARCHIP not to become a dumping ground for those who are unable to get into a state school but have sufficiently wealthy parents to pay for another school. However, let me not end on a negative note - the establishment of any new school of architecture is entirely positive.
Jakub Kynčl, Knesl + Kynčl Architects

The establishment itself may not mean much, but primarily the long-term successful existence of ARCHIP (which I sincerely wish to all the initiators and realizers of this great idea) will surely improve the quality of architectural education in the Czech Republic and perhaps at least contribute in some small way to the rehabilitation of the teaching profession as a valued and not underpaid expert.
Antonín Novák, DRNH

I would like for ARCHIP to provide another reference element in the Czech Republic that will break the myths of established "certainties" in the principles of educating architects. At the same time, I am curious about how a radically different motivation for listeners – money – will manifest itself. And how will educators cope with that?
Jakub Filip Novák

I expect that the new school will bring new approaches, new interesting personalities among both educators and students.
This is a step towards opening our architectural scene to the world. I hope the school will collaborate with our existing schools that have similar goals.
Vlasta Poláčková, Vice-Chairwoman of the Association for Urbanism and Spatial Planning

“The realization of a dream is also its end…” goes an old wisdom.
I hope that the realization of Martin Roubík's dream of an independent and free school will not also be its end. I wish Regina Loukotová success in achieving the "impossible."
Otherwise, of course, I welcome all initiatives in the field of architectural education, of which there will never be enough. The Czech architectural pond needs competition.
I also hope that the new institution will find a relationship with the Faculty of Architecture at CTU similar to the way the Berlage Institute gradually found its relationship with TU Delft, which can now be described as synergy.
Zdeněk Zavřel, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture CTU in Prague
