Brno - Brno will again have the Royal Chapel, which was founded in 1297 by King Václav II. It will be assembled from the original stone fragments of this building. The Gothic chapel will be located on the roof of the parking garage on Dominikánské náměstí, not far from where it stood for centuries. It could be opened as early as the end of next year, said Brno Mayor Roman Onderka (ČSSD) today. The chapel was demolished in 1908.
Currently, a multifunctional building with a café, reminiscent of the actor Vladimír Menšík, stands in its place. The chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Wenceslaus was, according to experts, architecturally unique. It was remarkable for its massiveness, reaching a height of four meters. The main part of the structure was supported by a single column.
When Brno city councilors proposed demolishing the chapel at the beginning of the last century due to city center renovations, it sparked a wave of discontent. Opponents of the project did not succeed with their objections. They only managed to secure one thing: a promise that the chapel would be rebuilt.
"After 101 years, we will now fulfill the promise of our predecessors," Onderka said. The fragments of the chapel are stored in several locations around Brno.
On the roof of the eight-story parking garage, with 450 spaces for 170 million crowns, a space will be created in the coming months where all the preserved pieces will be connected and erected. Some parts of the chapel have not survived and will need to be manufactured. A separate staircase will lead to the chapel to ensure it is accessible to the public at all times.
