Building a transport terminal in Havířov is postponed

Havířov (Karvinsko) - The construction of a transport terminal in Havířov in the Karviná region, which faced the threat of the station building being demolished, has been postponed. The city has decided to withdraw from the contract for the provision of European funding intended for co-financing the reconstruction of the area in front of the station, which was an integral part of the entire terminal construction project. This was reported to ČTK by the city hall spokesperson Eva Wojnarová.
    The construction of the new transport terminal was a joint project of the city and Czech Railways, which were to take care of the reconstruction of the station building, while the city was to address the adjustment of the area in front of the station. According to the original plans, the construction, which was to connect rail, bus, and personal transport, was supposed to be completed this year. It was estimated to cost around 200 million CZK and both project partners could have obtained about 118 million CZK in grants.
    However, the station building built in the Brussels style was to be demolished for the terminal, which long-term representatives of the Důl architektury association and part of the professional public protested against.
    "We are excited that the demolition will not take place now. Of course, we know that demolition may occur in the next funding period, but since the funding titles have not yet been announced, we have time and can completely change the project," said Lucie Chytilová from the Důl architektury association to ČTK.
    According to her, Důl architektury wants to offer cooperation to the city. "We would like to work together with the city on a new project that would include the reconstruction of the station and also look for the use of the building," Chytilová stated.
    The Ministry of Culture has repeatedly refused to declare the station building a cultural monument in the past, most recently this autumn. However, the National Heritage Institute has filed a complaint against the ministry's decision. "According to our information, the complaint commission has already met, stated the result at its meeting, and we are now waiting for its publication," Chytilová noted.
    According to Wojnarová, an agreement to terminate the grant contract should be signed in the coming days. "Until the options for financing the reconstruction of the area in front of the station from the grant titles of the subsequent programming period are clarified, further preparation of the project will be paused, and the city will focus on completing the related project for the reconstruction of the railway underpass on the local road U Nádraží. The aim of this project is to increase the quality of safety and comfort for pedestrians and cyclists between the Havířov station area and Šumbark," the spokesperson stated.
