Havířov (Karvinsko) - The civic association Důl architektury, which strives to save the railway station in Havířov in the Karviná region, is preparing a series of cultural events next week in the station building under the title The Station is Alive! CTK was informed about this by Martin Kadrman from the Association of Organizations for the Protection and Development of Cultural Heritage of the Czech Republic. The station, built in the Brussels style, was threatened with demolition due to the planned construction of a transport terminal. However, the Minister of Transport in resignation, Zdeněk Žák, advocates preserving the original station hall. This does not please the city, which fears losing an approved European subsidy of 85 million crowns intended for the construction of the transport terminal. Therefore, city councilors are asking Žák to reconsider his stance. "The intention to build a new transport terminal in Havířov has been a joint project of the statutory city and the Czech Railways company from the beginning. The condition of a joint project has allowed for applications for subsidies from European funds, which have already been granted, but if the construction does not start, both sides will lose the subsidies," said the spokesperson of the municipality, Eva Wojnarová. Additionally, the city is unhappy that it would lose about three million crowns that it has already spent from its budget on the project and preparation of the construction. Representatives of the civic association Důl architektury do not want the station to be demolished. They demand that the building be reconstructed and a suitable functional use be found for it. "We want to show that the Havířov station has an unexplored potential for hosting cultural events. Over seven days, the program will focus on young children from kindergartens, students, seniors, basically for the general public," said the association’s chairwoman and architect Lucie Chytilová. The series of cultural events will kick off on Monday at 20:00 with an exhibition opening of photographs titled Panelákové děti, authored by Havířov photographer Jaroslav Kocián. The opening will be followed by a musical project featuring singer Šárka Secová and guitarist Marek Przybytek. There will also be events prepared for children and high school students, film and theater performances, as well as a literary evening dedicated to young poets from the region who will read from their works. The association also seeks to attract seniors with the folk cimbalom ensemble Vonička.
