Chomutov – Chomutov will present the vision for the future of the former municipal baths. The condition of the building from the 1980s is good, so the city will not demolish it. After a year of work and public hearings, architects will present their operational concept. CTK was informed about this today by Deputy Mayor David Dinda (New North).
The architectural study for the transformation of the baths by the Vrtiška & Žák studio will be presented to the public on September 4 in the bathing hall of the baths. "Our goal was to come up with a clear, professionally developed concept of potential future operations after years of discussions, which would be based on the technical possibilities of the building, set in its surroundings, and offer a meaningful program not just for a narrow group of city residents," Dinda stated.
Among the options regarding the future of the building in the city center, complete demolition was also considered. According to the static assessment, the massive reinforced concrete structure is in very good condition, which was one of the factors in the decision to preserve the building.
The study developed by the architects evaluates the quantity and level of services in the region. "The confrontation of current needs and the present situation led to the conclusion that the spa operation will be partially preserved. Moreover, it will be supplemented with other suitable functional uses of the former spa building," states the website created to present the study.
About 150 people are expected to attend the public hearing, and it is necessary to wear a mask inside.
The municipal baths with a fifty-meter swimming pool ceased to serve the public in 2012. Since then, many ideas have emerged for how to utilize the giant building. These included an educational center, facilities for surfers with an artificial wave, a botanical garden, and more.
The baths were opened to the public by Chomutov on October 1, 1980. At that time, it was one of the most modern swimming complexes in northern Bohemia. Evidence of this is the overflow pool, which allowed the water level to be reduced by up to half a meter. After the accident of the main filter, the operation of the baths was terminated, and it was replaced by a water park in the former barracks area of Zadní Vinohrady.
