Brno - The completion of the statue of architect Adolf Loos and Father Martin Středa, which the city is having made as part of the project Sculptures for Brno, has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. They were supposed to be finished by the end of June, but the city will take them from the authors only at the end of July or mid-August, the city hall administration informed in a press release.
"Both creators of Loos' monument and the author of Středa's statue requested an extension of the deadline for the delivery of the work. Their subcontractors interrupted production due to government regulations against the spread of the coronavirus. Therefore, the work related to the completion of the pieces has been postponed. Since the situation was beyond their control, we certainly accommodated them. The statue of Father Středa will be handed over by its author Jan Šebánek by August 12, and we will officially unveil it on August 15 during the Day of Brno," said Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).
Father Středa earned an honorable place in the history of Brno for his actions during the siege of the city by the Swedes, when he organized students, apprentices, and townspeople and acted as a spiritual and moral leader of the defenders of Brno. His statue will stand at the corner of Beethoven and Jezuitská streets, near the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where he is buried.
The monument to architect Adolf Loos was created jointly by sculptor Oldřich Morys and architect Jaroslav Sedlák and will stand at Janáček Square near the Continental Hotel, where Loos' birthplace used to be. It is expected to be placed by the end of July.
The Sculptures for Brno project will continue with the creation of statues commemorating Brno native Marie Restituta Kafka and Queen Eliška Rejčka, who died in Brno.
