Brno - Brno will build a statue for two million crowns that will commemorate the Brno-born architect Adolf Loos. It will resemble the form of Loos's gravestone, which is located at the Central Cemetery in Vienna, consisting of several blocks and bodies. The authors of the design, Oldřich Morys and Jaroslav Sedlák, who won the city competition for the statue's appearance, told reporters today. The work in Janáčkovo náměstí, near Loos's residence, is to be completed by the end of 2019.
The jury composed of experts and politicians selected from 63 proposals. Morys and Sedlák were successful. "The jury agreed that this is a very strong design conceptually linking Brno and Vienna as the architect's birthplace and death place. It is a shape-characteristic work that also elegantly recalls Loos's spatial solution, the so-called Raumplan," said the Mayor's deputy Matěj Hollan (Žít Brno), who is responsible for culture and was also a jury member.
The monument will be in Janáčkovo náměstí. In the adjacent Kounicova Street, where today's Hotel Continental stands, was Loos's birthplace. "The proposed monument is conceived as a concrete sculptural form of the gravestone of Adolf Loos situated in the Vienna cemetery. The main idea of the design is to create a footprint of the place of Loos's final resting place for the location where he was born and raised," said the authors Morys and Sedlák. Loos created his gravestone in the form of a granite cube himself at the Vienna cemetery.
According to the authors, the form along with the gravestone would create a compact monolith in the shape of a block. "However, this constellation will never occur, as the gravestone is in Vienna and the form is in Brno. Nevertheless, this creates an imaginary connection between the two places," the authors stated. The bodies could also serve as urban furniture, Sedlák added.
The work is part of the long-term project Statues for Brno. Within this framework, a statue of priest Martin Středa will also be created, with plans for statues referring to Queen Eliška Rejčka or architect Bohuslav Fuchs. Earlier, works referencing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Thomas Alva Edison, or poet and writer Jan Skácel were also created.
