Prague - The supervisory board of Czech Railways today agreed to sell the former train station building in Ústí nad Orlicí. Radek Joklík, spokesman for Czech Railways, told ČTK. Four bidders were interested in the unused station, but only two bids made it to the final round. However, ČD did not want to disclose the winner of the competition today, justifying that the participants would be informed of the outcome in writing on Thursday. According to ČTK, it should be the company Oustecké nádraží, whose members are interested in the preservation of the heritage-protected building. According to managing director Martin Kadrman, they offered CZK 1.45 million for it.
The object of the former dispatch building has not been used by Czech Railways for several years, and the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC) is not interested in it either, as it has long been trying to acquire most stations from ČD under its management. "The building is not part of the planned transfer, because SŽDC has no use for it. As part of the sale of part of the business, it can only purchase from ČD those properties that it needs to operate the railway or to handle passengers,” Joklík stated.
Members of the company Oustecké nádraží have been interested in preserving the building for a long time. The company would like to create facilities for passengers in the historic building, mainly a waiting room, café, restaurant, and possibly a shop for basic groceries. In the first floor, the company plans to renovate the apartments.
The use of the station building is complicated by its location in the railway yard; there is no access for vehicles. Overall, however, it is not in bad condition, although significant investment will be necessary for the renovations of the long-neglected building.
The original station from 1874 is one of the oldest station buildings in the country. It was designed by architect Rudolf Frey. The building, with an H-shaped floor plan and stone cornices, is made of brickwork, while the upper floors are made of less common timber-framed construction. It is interesting, among other things, because it stands in the middle of the railway yard and is passable, allowing dispatchers and passengers to cross to both sides. It has been out of operation for several years, and a new dispatch building was created in Ústí following the modernization of the railway hub.
