On October 24, 2012, a ceremonial presentation of the State Prize for Literature, the State Prize for Translation, and the Ministry of Culture Award for contributions in the fields of theater, music, visual arts, and architecture took place at the National Theatre in Prague. The laureate of the Ministry of Culture Award for contributions in architecture became Professor Emil Přikryl.
The Ministry of Culture Award for contributions in architecture for 2012 was awarded by the Minister of Culture to Emil Přikryl for his long-term artistic and pedagogical merits in the field of architecture. At the ceremony in the National Theatre, Přikryl said: "I would like to thank Karel Hubáček, Rostislav Švácha, my father, and of course my students. I wish for them that the amazing building of the AVU School of Architecture designed by Jan Kotěra and Josef Gočár truly belongs to them."
FROM THE REASONING OF THE MINISTRY Emil Přikryl is a prominent Czech architect and educator. His colleague Mirko Baum wrote about him in the book Emil Přikryl and his School (2010): "I believe that the substance of an architect's life is not to build as much as possible, but to build well what he constructs. Emil's work may not be large in number, but its quality already ensures him an undeniable place on the Parnassus of Czech architecture, alongside greats such as Jan Kotěra and Jaroslav Fragner... He was born on December 28, 1945, in Bílovec. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague (1968) and the AVU School of Architecture (1972). Since 1969, he was a member of the SIAL School led by Karel Hubáček. In 1990, he left SIAL and returned to AVU, where he has been a professor ever since. Among his most famous works are the family house of Věra Chytilová in Prague's Troja, the Česká Lípa Shopping Center Uran, the IBA social housing project in Berlin's Kreuzberg district (with J. Eisler and J. Suchomel), or the reconstruction of the Benedikt Rejt Gallery in Louny. In 2010, he was awarded the Honor of the Czech Chamber of Architects.
The awards are granted according to Government Regulation No. 5/2003 Coll., on awards in the field of culture awarded by the Ministry of Culture, as amended by Government Regulations No. 98/2006 Coll. and No. 126/2009 Coll. Proposals for the award may be submitted by professional institutions, civic associations, other non-profit and interest organizations, individuals working in the field, and authorities of state administration and self-government. Written proposals must be sent by the proposers to the Ministry of Culture by May 31 of the year the award is granted. For the qualified assessment of proposals for the individual awards, the Minister of Culture appoints advisory bodies - juries in the respective fields.
Emil Přikryl received the Honor of the Czech Chamber of Architects 2009 and the Chamber then nominated him for the Ministry of Culture award in both 2011 and 2012. The vice-chairman of the jury for the Ministry of Culture Award for contributions in architecture this year was former chairman of the Czech Chamber of Architects Jan Vrana. The laureates of the Award were Eva Jiřičná in 2009, Alena Šrámková in 2010, and Miroslav Masák in 2011.
