Olomouc - The University Hospital Olomouc (FN Olomouc) today commenced construction of an oncology pavilion costing nearly 227 million crowns, which will improve access to modern treatment for oncology patients, increase the capacity of outpatient care, and acquire a new chemotherapy unit. The hospital received a grant of 217.9 million crowns from the National Recovery Plan of the Czech Republic for the project. The construction of the pavilion is expected to be completed by the end of next year. František Valíček, the head of the investment department at FN Olomouc, informed ČTK of this today.
The new oncology pavilion will be designated P4. It will be connected to the adjacent outpatient pavilion of the hematology-oncology clinic by connecting bridges. "It will be a six-story building, with the highest setback floor primarily serving as a mechanical room for ventilation and cooling," Valíček stated. The flat roof will be covered with vegetation. A photovoltaic power plant will be installed on the southern facade of the building, on the roof, and the shelters above the parking lot. The construction includes a new parking lot with a capacity of 134 spaces. The project includes the reconstruction and extension of the access road from the parking lot near the neurology clinic. "At the same time, it will connect with the existing road in front of the children's clinic," Valíček added.
In the new building, the outpatient part of the oncology clinic will be located after its completion. "The main goal of the project is to expand the capacity of the chemotherapy unit and increase the capacity of our outpatient clinics. We also want to maintain the separation of preventive oncology from acute operations. Its outpatient clinic will be located on the ground floor and will be frequented by patients after successful oncology therapy, as well as those interested in preventive programs for the early detection of cancer. A part of preventive oncology includes counseling for hereditary cancer syndromes, for people who have an increased genetic risk of cancer," said Hana Študentová, the head of the oncology clinic.
In the other above-ground floors, an outpatient oncology unit, chemotherapy unit with expanded bed capacity, palliative outpatient clinic with an application room, and a room for vascular access management will operate. The top floor is dedicated to clinical research, a seminar room for teaching and and professional seminars. The building will include offices for two psychologists, a physiotherapist, and an ambassador for oncology patients.
"The new spaces will allow for an expansion of indications across the entire spectrum of oncology diagnoses; furthermore, the individual parts of the treatment process will be tailored specifically, with treatment chosen to be custom-fitted for each patient, aiming for the best outcome while maintaining the highest possible quality of life," noted Bohuslav Melichar, the head of the oncology clinic at FN Olomouc.
