Olomouc - The Olomouc Region intends to start the long-planned reconstruction of the red church on Třída Svobody in the center of Olomouc this year, which has served as a storage space for books for nearly 60 years and has been inaccessible to the public. The repair will take two years and will cost up to 130 million crowns. This was announced to reporters today by Governor Ladislav Okleštěk (ANO).
"The red church will be reconstructed and an annex will be built next to it. We would like it to serve not only as a library but also for various cultural and social events," said Okleštěk. After reconstruction, the church will have a capacity of 200 seats and will also serve as an information center for the Olomouc Region.
The red church, whose construction was completed in 1903, is 55 meters tall. Since 1956, it has been used as a storage facility for the Scientific Library in Olomouc. This year, the books were moved to a new archive on the outskirts of the city, and the church has been empty since then.
According to Okleštěk, the regional office is already preparing a tender for the contractor for the reconstruction of the red church, which will be financed by the Olomouc Region. "We expect construction to begin this year, which should last about two years," he pointed out.
The estimated budget for the investment project ranges from 100 million crowns to 130 million crowns. "We anticipate that through the tender, we will be able to slightly reduce the amount. Our main concern is that the construction is carried out to a very high standard and that people have access to the newly reconstructed spaces as soon as possible," the governor added.
