Hradec Králové - The city of Hradec Králové has postponed the deadline for submitting bids for the tender worth more than a hundred million crowns for the construction of a new square in the Gayer and Vrbenský barracks area in the city center to July 3rd. The original deadline for submitting bids was June 23rd. The postponement was requested by applicants seeking clarification and adjustments to the contract. This is evident from the tender documentation on the profile of the contracting authority in Hradec Králové.

The city has so far provided six clarifications to the tender documentation for the contract, which has an estimated value of 131 million crowns excluding VAT. They answered 22 questions in these clarifications.

With the construction of the square, the city hall will continue the reconstruction of the Vrbenský barracks, which is currently being carried out by the Hradec Králové Region. Contractors are expected to repair the paved areas and utility networks across the entire area of the former barracks and restore greenery. The space will be fitted with new furniture. Until now, the area between the barracks buildings has served as a parking lot for about 60 cars. The city intends to cover part of the costs with a European grant.

“The transformation of the ground floor between the Gayer and Vrbenský barracks will create a unique multifunctional space that will offer a place for leisure, meetings, and relaxation. A main pedestrian path to the historical center of the city could run across the new square,” stated Mayor Pavlína Springerová (Hradec Democratic Club).

The Vrbenský and Gayer barracks were established in the 19th century. They are approximately the same size and are located mirror-like opposite each other in the area. In 2021, the Hradec Králové Region completed the reconstruction of the Gayer barracks for 310 million crowns. A specialized workplace of the East Bohemia Museum was established there.

Since last year, the region has been converting the Vrbenský barracks into a museum building. The project, costing 565 million crowns, is expected to be structurally completed this autumn. The construction of the square is to follow the reconstruction of the Vrbenský barracks. Everything could be completed by 2027.
