Hradec Králové - Three bids were received for the competition to construct a new square in the area of Gayer's and Vrbenský barracks in downtown Hradec Králové. The evaluation committee will now review them, said the city's spokesperson Kateřina Rohlíčková to ČTK. The deadline for submitting bids for the tender worth over one hundred million was this morning.

"The selection committee received three bids, which will be assessed in more detail. The committee will then recommend the winning bidder to the city authorities. The issue will first be discussed by the city's councilors, but the final decision will be made by the city representatives, who will vote on the contract at their next meeting," Rohlíčková told ČTK today. The names of the bidders were not disclosed.

The city of Hradec Králové has postponed the deadline for submitting bids several times. The original deadline was June 23. The extensions were requested by bidders for clarifications and modifications to the contract. The estimated value of the contract is 131 million crowns excluding VAT.

With the construction of the square, the town hall will build upon the reconstruction of Vrbenský barracks, which is currently being undertaken by the Hradec Králové Region. The city hopes to cover part of the costs with European funding.

The builders are expected to repair the paved areas and engineering networks in the former barracks area and restore greenery. The place will be fitted with new furniture. Until now, the space between the barracks buildings served as a parking lot. According to the city hall, one of the main pedestrian paths to the historic city center could run across the new square.

Vrbenský and Gayer's barracks were built in the 19th century. They are roughly the same size and are situated mirroring each other in the area. In 2021, the region completed the reconstruction of Gayer's barracks for 310 million crowns. A specialized workplace of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia was created within.

Since last year, the Vrbenský barracks have been undergoing reconstruction into a museum building. The project, costing 565 million crowns, is expected to be structurally completed by autumn. The overall reconstruction of the barracks, including the new square, is expected to be finished in 2027, totaling around one billion crowns.
