Jablonec nad Nisou - Jablonec nad Nisou will offer tourists not only an ascent to the renovated town hall tower and a view from it this summer, but for the first time, it will also allow them to take a look at the recently reconstructed meeting rooms of the town hall. After years, they have returned to their original form from the 1930s when the building was constructed according to the designs of architect Karel Winter.
"We expect the greatest interest in the ascents at the beginning of the holidays. Lookouts are the family jewels of our region, and during the summer season, the Jablonec town hall also serves as a lookout tower. On clear days, you can see Černá Studnice, Bramberk, Královka, Císařský kámen, Liberecká výšina, and of course, Ještěd from the parapet of the tower," said Petr Vobořil, director of the Jablonec Cultural and Information Center, which ensures the ascents and also operates the House of Ethnographers Scheybal and the Church of St. Anna.
According to Vobořil, the so-called paternoster - an elevator that only takes visitors to the fourth floor - is a great attraction for tourists at the town hall. After that, they must climb 116 steps to the tower on foot. This year, the center expanded the visit to the lookout by offering tours of the reconstructed meeting rooms on the second floor of the town hall. This will especially please admirers of functionalism. "We are responding to the interest of tourists, especially from abroad. Until now, it was only possible to get to know the interiors of the town hall more closely during the celebrations of European Heritage Day," Vobořil said.
The Jablonec town hall is an important building of Czechoslovak interwar architecture. It was built from 1931 to 1933. The city has been gradually repairing the building for nine years. The facade is being completed, and the windows and interiors have been renovated. There are new lanterns in the vestibule that were previously missing because there was no money for them during the construction of the town hall. Two salons have also returned to their original form, and last year the large assembly hall of the council underwent restoration. Czech glassmakers and craftsmen created replicas of the lighting fixtures and furniture based on Winter's original plans.
The functionalist town hall, including the lookout, can only be visited on weekdays during the city hall's official hours. However, the tourist information center in the House of Scheybal and the Church of St. Anna is open to tourists daily, including weekends.
