Karlovy Vary - Karlovy Vary will change its logo and the visual appearance of all promotional materials after decades. The official documents, such as the city's letterheads, will also receive a new visual identity. The city's information center chose the design of the new visual elements through a public competition involving 17 artists and graphic studios. The winning design was created by 31-year-old graphic designer Eva Hudečková from Plzeň, said city spokesperson Jan Kopál to ČTK. Karlovy Vary currently uses the name of the city as its logo, with the two words separated by a red arch symbolizing the eruption of the Vřídlo. Starting next year, it will gradually be replaced on all materials by a logo that features the name of the city, with "Karlovy" in blue and "Vary" in red. At the end, a symbol for temperature in degrees will be added. "The new logo and the visual appearance of other materials that use similar elements are more contrasting and easier to work with," stated Deputy Mayor Jiří Klsák (KOA). The new visual identity will also affect the city's website and the design of the Town Hall newsletters published by the city will change as well. According to Klsák, this will not significantly burden the city's finances. Essentially, these are costs that the city would have incurred anyway when ordering printed materials. The additional expense was essentially only 150,000 crowns, which is the author's fee resulting from the contract with the competition winner. "We knew we would change the logo, so no printed materials with the old logo were ordered," added Klsák. The author of the new visual identity of Karlovy Vary, Eva Hudečková, studied at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň and the Department of Art and Design at UWB. She has designed objects and carried out graphic work for the "Pilgrimage to the Planets" project for the Techmania science centre in Plzeň. She has also participated in several international art workshops and exhibitions, such as the Plzeň Benches 2006 project or Europe Without Barriers.
