The Faculty of Art and Architecture TUL publishes a book mapping the past, busy with work and events, academic year 2012/2013. In the context of Czech universities, the nearly 500-page publication with the simple title -FUA- is unparalleled. The dean of the faculty, architect Zdeněk Fránek, describes the reasons for the publication of the book in the editorial with the words: “The book is meant to send a number of signals that we exist, in what form we are, and that we have our goals.” This is a clear signal from the city under Ještěd. The school is showing its cards.
After discussions among the creators (2nd-year architecture students Marek Nedelka and Matyáš Fialka) and Dean Zdeněk Fránek, it is clear that the students fulfilled the dean's intention, resulting in a book structure that will be published regularly every year. It showcases successful graduates, diploma and bachelor's theses, all studios of the school, successful projects by students and educators, and events that took place over the past year. It introduces a new website, paths, and activities in the world. And all that is concluded with the foundations from which the Liberec faculty, established in 1994, emerges. The faculty is expecting a series of significant events in the next academic year. These will be detailed in further yearbooks, thus creating a unique collection of books about the life of one of the Czech art schools that live with a common spirit.
Compared to other schools boasting a centuries-old tradition, this young school of art and architecture stands out for its dynamism and flexibility. The authors expressed this dynamism with a color gradient. They describe the idea of the publication, its unique graphic design arising from its purpose and content, as follows: “The book is divided into 30 sections of 16 pages each. Each section carries a different intensity of one color (this year it is pink). The arrangement of the sections is subordinated to this gradation. From the foundations to the sections of the graduates themselves. Thanks to the exposed spine of the binding, we also see the transition from vivid pink to white on the outside. Thus, from the outside, we see inside the book. All of this is sewn with black and white threads. Clear and direct.”
The book is available for purchase in person at the faculty's dean's office or can be ordered via email at [email protected] for 500,- (+ postage).
