Prague - The Library of the Year 2008 has become the Municipal Library in Pavlovice near Přerov. The award, along with a prize of 70,000 crowns, was presented to representatives of the library today in the Mirror Chapel of Klementinum by Minister of Culture Václav Jehlička (KDU-ČSL).
The jury appreciated that the library is not only an institution offering book lending but also a well-functioning cultural and educational center of the community. The winning library was chosen from 13 nominees.
"The library is an information and community center of the municipality, generously supported both financially and with personnel, with a range of activities helped by both office staff and elected representatives," stated the jury. The library works with children readers, organizes language courses, handicraft courses, and trips, and participates in municipal events, which include regular stays for children from the children's home.
In the same category, namely the basic library category, the minister also presented diplomas to the Municipal Library of Mokrá - Horákov in the South Moravian Region for creatively mastering modern information technologies and promoting reading, and to the Municipal Library in Praskačka in the Hradec Králové Region for colorful and widely developed community work with the public, including children, youth, and adults.
The library in Mokrá - Horákov has gained new spaces for a unique reconstruction of a coal boiler house due to the municipality. It regularly hosts mothers on maternity leave and children in the library club, where they can not only read stories using purchased puppets but also perform them. The library also serves as a mini-gallery.
The municipality of Praskačka operates two libraries, both managed by Petr Černohlávek. In collaboration with his wife, they run a club for adults in the libraries, organize a reading league for children, and prepare art workshops.
As part of the Library of the Year award, there is also a category for significant achievement in providing public library and information services. None of the eight nominated libraries were chosen for the main award this year, but a diploma was given to the City Library in Český Těšín for projects supporting reading through international cooperation of libraries in Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary.
The awards for libraries and librarians have been granted by the Minister of Culture since 2001. The award in the basic library category is intended primarily for libraries in small municipalities, where volunteer librarians operate, as a public recognition of this work. The second category is intended for library operators or their employees. A project awarded in this category must be unique, and the awarded library must solve a specific problem with the submitted project as the only one in the republic.
