Krnáčová: We will investigate the possibility of building a metro line from Veleslavín to the airport

Prague - Prague will assess the possibility of constructing the metro line A to Václav Havel Airport in Ruzyně. A branch line would be created at the Nádraží Veleslavín station. This was communicated by Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) to ČTK. She has already instructed the transport company (DPP) to develop this possibility further and to determine the potential cost, construction duration, and whether it would be beneficial for Prague. Metro A runs from Dejvická through Veleslavín to Motol. The Czech Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC) is preparing the modernization of the track from Prague to Kladno with a branch to the airport.

"The expressway to the airport is not a Prague project and SŽDC will not build it sooner than in ten years. Therefore, I want to explore other options for connecting the center with the airport," said Krnáčová.

Connecting the center with the airport has long been a problem for Prague. Passengers currently have to take buses either from Veleslavín or from Zličín. One of the options, according to the mayor, is to create a branch of the metro line A at the Nádraží Veleslavín station. "I have instructed DPP to investigate this option, and we will see how quickly it could be realized, how much it would cost, and whether such an option would be financially and timely worthwhile," Krnáčová stated.

Prague previously worked with the option of extending the metro from Dejvická all the way to Ruzyně. Originally, the line was to run through Veleslavín to the Dlouhá míle station, where a large park-and-ride facility was to be built, and from there to the airport. Ultimately, this option was abandoned at that time, and the route was diverted from Veleslavín to Motol Hospital. The section to Motol was opened in April 2015.

SŽDC is now preparing project documentation for the repair of part of the track to Kladno, specifically between Veleslavín and the airport. The section between Dejvice and Veleslavín is planned to run through a tunnel. The cost of modernizing the track from Prague's Masaryk Station to Kladno with a branch to the airport will amount to 31 billion crowns.
