Litomyšl - The Regional Museum in Litomyšl will undergo extensive renovation. The project has been in preparation for several years and has received a grant of 74 million crowns from the Regional Operational Program, museum director René Klimeš informed journalists today. The baroque building of the museum from the early 18th century is set to be expanded with an integrated entrance building featuring a foyer and social facilities. The building will include new exhibition and social spaces as well as facilities for presentation or educational events. The author of the project is architect Josef Pleskot. The exact start date for the work at the museum is not yet known, but it should commence this year. The museum management will specify when the building will close to the public. The Litomyšl Museum was founded in 1891 and was located in the premises of a closed municipal secondary school. In 1926, it moved to a spacious baroque building of the former Piarist gymnasium built between 1714 and 1718. The museum has been located in this building ever since. Since the 1990s, the museum has also managed the birthplace of Bedřich Smetana. In 2004, the existing town museum was transformed into a regional one with jurisdiction over the Svitavy district, and its founder became the Pardubice Region.
