Masaryk University will build dormitories and rental housing in the campus for 740 million CZK

Brno – Masaryk University will build new university dormitories and rental housing on its campus in Brno-Bohunice. It will invest nearly 740 million crowns, mostly from a loan from the National Development Bank. This is the largest investment in housing in the history of Masaryk University. More than 1000 beds will be created in three buildings. Today, the university's leadership signed the loan agreements. Rector Martin Bareš mentioned this to journalists.

The campus houses the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science, as well as the Faculty of Sports Studies. The Faculty of Pharmacy will soon relocate to the new buildings in the BioPharma Hub complex. With the increase in the number of students, academics, and foreign researchers, the university leadership sees a growing need for accommodation in the immediate vicinity of the campus.

"It is not enough to build state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, and research centers – it is just as important to create quality living conditions for the people who study, teach, and research there. The availability of housing is currently identified by our applicants as the number one problem, and during regular visits to the university dormitories, I see how their expectations and needs are changing," stated Bareš.

The residential complex will be built at the corner of Netroufalky and Kamenice streets. Three high-rise buildings will be constructed on an area of approximately 9000 m². Two will serve as student dormitories, while the third will offer rental housing primarily intended for academic staff, researchers, and other university employees. The project will include underground parking, a living roof, and new public spaces.

The loan from the National Development Bank from the Affordable Rental Housing program amounts to 481 million crowns for 25 years with a one percent annual interest rate. The university borrowed an additional 74 million crowns from Komerční Banka and will invest 184.6 million crowns from its own resources.

"Investments in a modern campus help increase the availability and quality of education, strengthen the competitiveness of Czech universities, and contribute to the development of regions," stated Tomáš Nidetzký, Chairman of the Board of the National Development Bank, in a press release.

The university aims to select a contractor for the construction in the first half of next year, with the start of construction planned for August 2027 and completion in June 2030.

A loan from the European Investment Bank also helped the university with the construction of the Bohunice campus years ago. This year, it was repaid.
