Brno - The Masaryk University Campus in the Brno-Bohunice area will be open to the public. The school is preparing an open day on November 10 as part of the Science and Technology Week. The institution wants to introduce itself mainly to high school students who are considering studying at MU, said Vice-Rector Jana Musilová to journalists today, adding that the open day could become a tradition. During the event, MU faculties and the Czech Academy of Sciences will also open their doors to the public.
About half of the campus is now completed. The area, where the first phase has already been finished, is currently used by about 500 students; in 2008, when the entire university campus is expected to be operational, that number will be about ten times greater. Builders are currently working on the blue phase worth over a billion and the red phase worth 340 million. The school still awaits the yellow-green phase, and in the coming days, MU will announce a competition for construction suppliers. Construction is expected to begin in April, with completion scheduled for September 2008.
The open day at the campus will not be the only program for Science and Technology Week. This year's main themes are biotechnology, nanotechnology, and European cultural heritage. The program includes scientific cafes and lectures in the city center, and activities are also planned at the Mikuláš Koperník Observatory and Planetarium.
Science and Technology Week takes place not only in Brno but also in Prague, České Budějovice, and Ostrava. It includes 50 institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, universities, and several other institutions.
