Zlín - The city of Zlín has had the blacksmith statue, which is on the building of the Zlín city hall, restored. The shine of the work by Zlín architect František Lýdie Gahura was returned by academic sculptor and restorer Tomáš Martinák, the city hall spokesperson Tomáš Melzer informed ČTK.
"The unmissable sandstone sculpture has not been subject to professional intervention by a restorer for the past thirty years, and possibly even longer. Due to weather conditions, visible damage has appeared in several places, and biological deposits have also negatively affected the surface of the statue,” said Deputy Mayor Pavel Brada. The city will receive 176,000 crowns from the Ministry of Culture for the restoration of the statue from the program for the regeneration of urban heritage zones and reservations.
The city hall building is a dominant feature of Míru Square and has been on the list of immovable cultural monuments in the Czech Republic since 2001. "The current appearance of the city hall was given by architect and sculptor František Lýdie Gahura in 1936 and 1937, who ultimately adorned the building with the blacksmith statue as well. Originally, it overlooked Kovářská Street, now Bartošova Street,” said Eva Husáková, head of the property management department of the city hall.
