Šternberk - In 2022, a new indoor swimming pool is set to be opened, which the municipality of Šternberk in the Olomouc region plans to build. The construction of the pool was approved last week by the Šternberk council, whose residents currently need to travel to surrounding towns and villages to swim. Costs will range from 177.3 million to 196.3 million crowns, depending on the chosen heating source. Irena Černocká, spokesperson for the municipality, said this today to ČTK. "The financing of the investment will be provided from the municipality's own resources. The implementation of the project is planned for the years 2020 to 2021, with permanent operation expected to start around March 2022," the spokesperson stated. The construction of a covered 25-meter pool with six lanes is proposed on land owned by the municipality, which is designated for recreation in the zoning plan. The swimming pool will be adjacent to the hospital area and the future athletic stadium area.
"The implementation will create a sports and relaxation facility with year-round operation, which will include a restaurant open to both pool visitors and the general public. The capacity of the indoor pool at any one time will be 125 people, and the wellness capacity will be 24 people," Černocká added.
The area will feature a covered multipurpose pool with swimming, recreation, educational, and children's sections, including wellness facilities. The wellness area will include two dry saunas, a steam bath, a Kneipp path, a shower center, and a relaxation room. The wellness operation will also include an outdoor terrace with a cooling pool.
According to the municipality, people in Šternberk are noticeably missing a pool. "We are especially hearing from parents of children and school management, as it is currently necessary to travel complicatedly to Olomouc, Úničov, or Bohuňovice for swimming. We believe that a city the size of Šternberk should have its own swimming facility," the spokesperson said.
In Šternberk, which has about 15,000 residents, there is also a significant swimming base, according to Černocká. "There is a swimming club here that has successes even on the international stage, especially among senior competitors. We would like to encourage children and youth to take up this sport," Černocká added.
