The surroundings of the Tugendhat villa in Brno have a new protective zone

Brno – Villa Tugendhat has a new protective zone for its surroundings. It includes the section of Černopolní Street in front of the villa and also the complex of gardens, said the mayor's deputy Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates) to ČTK today. According to him, the monument protection prohibits any interventions in the zone that would affect the villa's panorama. The creation of the protective zone was one of the conditions to which the city committed when the villa was inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list.

Until now, only the villa itself had been monumentally protected; now, in addition to the street in front of the building, the gardens connecting Villa Tugendhat with the Löw-Beer villa or Arnold's villa are also included. "The deadline for submitting comments expired on Monday, so the protection should take legal effect. There is still a theoretical possibility that someone sent a comment on Monday and it will arrive later by mail," Koláčný stated.

According to him, the protective zone prohibits interventions that would affect the character of the villa and its surroundings. "This is a step towards ensuring that not only the villa itself but also its surroundings remain unchanged for future generations," Koláčný added.

Brno's culture councilor Marek Fišer (Pirates) stated that the creation of the protective zone was one of the conditions to which the city committed when inscribing on the UNESCO heritage list. "I am very glad that after twenty years we have finally managed to meet our commitments," Fišer remarked.

Villa Tugendhat is the most visited monument in Brno. The villa was designed in 1928 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Greta and Fritz Tugendhat. It is unique for its construction, spatial arrangement, interior furnishings, technical background, and integration into nature. For the first time in the history of architecture, a steel load-bearing structure was used in the construction of a private house. From 2010 to 2012, the villa was renovated, with the intention of bringing the building as close as possible to the original design.
