Olomouc - Palacký University in Olomouc has recently announced a public tender for a construction company that will build a new faculty of science building in the Envelopa area. The construction, costing at least 850 million crowns, is expected to be completed in June 2008. This is the largest investment project of the university in at least the last 15 years. "The construction is planned for two years. The building should be handed over for use in August or September 2008. This year, we have already confirmed 60 million crowns from the Ministry of Education for the initial work," said university bursar Jiří Jirka today to ČTK. According to the dean of the Faculty of Science, Juraj Ševčík, the modern five-story building will provide facilities for areas in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and earth sciences. "Thus, the faculty will have two centers. Besides the new building in Envelopa, the biological sciences will be located in the Holice section. We would like the existing building on Svobody Avenue to remain home to the fields related to informatics, but that is still a matter of negotiations," Ševčík told ČTK today. He mentioned that additional spaces still need to be constructed in Holice. The university has already submitted a project for a grant from European structural funds totaling four billion crowns. One-third of the money is to be allocated for equipping the new faculty of science building in Envelopa and one-third for completing facilities in Holice. There are over 2,750 students studying at the Faculty of Science.
