Plzeň - The Plzeň Football Stadium in Štruncovy sady, where Viktoria Plzeň plays, is receiving its final form after years of renovations and gradual modifications. The club today opened one of the two corner towers that are being built at their own expense. The city, which owns the stadium, has invested hundreds of millions of crowns into its reconstruction over the past five years. The newly completed northern tower of the stadium was ceremoniously opened today by the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, Kateřina Valachová (ČSSD).
The northern tower will offer facilities mainly for working with youth - a space for the club's academy, accommodations for young talents, and administrative areas.
"Working with youth is one of our key pillars, and we are pleased that we can now offer our young players absolutely top-notch facilities and provide them with ideal conditions for both sports and personal growth," said the chairman of the Viktoria Plzeň - Football association, Petr Žitek.
According to the club owner, Tomáš Paclík, the opening of new facilities for working with youth is an important step towards ensuring the club's success in the future. By the end of the year, the club will also complete the construction of the southern corner tower of Doosan Arena, which will feature dining facilities and medical, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation services for the youth teams of the club's academy.
Plzeň began renovations on the stadium from the 1950s in the spring of 2011 to meet the requirements for the domestic top league and for European cup matches. After the renovation, the stadium has a capacity of nearly 11,700 spectators. Gradually, the earthen mounds beneath the outdated uncovered stands were removed, and new stands were built in their place. With the removal of the athletic track, the pitch was moved 18 meters closer to the main stand. The final adjustments this year focused on the main stand, which will be completed in the fall.
The city hall has invested nearly 500 million crowns into the stadium repairs. In addition, it had to spend over 100 million crowns on a new stadium for athletes, who had to leave Štruncovy sady due to the renovations. Hanzlík did not specify the costs for building the corner towers, but it had previously been mentioned that it could be in the tens of millions of crowns.
