Plzeň - Plzeň will begin this year with the reconstruction of the first league football stadium in Štruncovy sady. The renovation, spread over three years, is expected to cost approximately 357 million crowns, and the relocation of the athletics facilities to the outskirts of Skvrňany will cost 67 million. This was stated to reporters by the mayor's deputy Petr Rund (ODS) after a meeting of the city council.
    The stadium, where the current leader of the first league plays, does not meet the conditions for hosting European cup matches. Last year, because of this, the team had to play the cup preliminary round in Prague. From a technical perspective, the stadium does not meet the conditions of the Czech-Moravian Football Association's project League Stadiums 2012.
    This year, the city is expected to invest a total of 195 million crowns. According to the economic deputy Martin Zrzavecký (ČSSD), 71 million will come from the city budget, 24 million will be obtained from improved tax revenues of the city and districts. A sum of one hundred million will be received by the magistrate from the increased dividend income of the city-owned Plzeňská teplárenská.
    Construction work should start as early as spring. Gradually, the athletic track will be dismantled, the playing field will be moved, and new stands will be built after the earthworks are removed. A new athletic track and sectors, facilities with a stand, a covered running straight, and a parking lot will be built for athletes at the training ground in Skvrňany.
    The documentation for the building permit for the stadium adjustments should be completed by the end of January; right after that, the city will announce a competition for the contractor. Rund expects that in May it will be possible to start with the new stands, parking lot, and playing surface.
    The football stadium in Plzeň has been talked about for many years. One of the options considered was the construction of a completely new stadium. However, the city stepped back from this plan and decided on the renovation of Štruncovy sady. According to Mayor Martin Baxa (ODS), Plzeň ultimately chose a very economical option. The opposition, however, disagrees. Michal Vozobule from the strongest opposition party TOP 09 considers the proposed option to be bad, especially in light of the high costs of the reconstruction.
