Polička – The town of Polička in the Svitavy region completed repairs to 15 streets in the historical center at the end of the year. The town hall divided the work into ten phases, with the first starting in 2009. They restored the historical character, replacing asphalt with stone paving, the press release stated.

"All streets and alleys were paved, asphalt was replaced with granite paving, sidewalks were added, new lighting was installed, and repairs were made to the sewage system and water supply. The street repairs were preceded by a major revitalization of Palackého náměstí. Our town center has thus gained a true historical character and increased its attractiveness not only for local residents but also for visitors," said the town's spokesperson Naděžda Šauerová.

Over ten years, the town had the following streets repaired: Masarykova, Nová, Růžová, Tyršova, Na Jordáně, Riegrova, U Masných krámů, Hradební, Tylova, Šaffova, Pálená, Fortna, Štěpničná, Václavská, and Otakarova.

In the coming years, repairs will also move beyond the town walls, with the reconstruction of Eimova and Nádražní streets set to begin in 2022. Within the walls, the town is preparing the revitalization of the Bohuslav Martinů square near St. James' Church.

"Next year, the project documentation for the work will be created, and the entire reconstruction will then take place over the following two years. The costs of implementing this large project are estimated at 15 to 20 million crowns. The beautiful and uniquely restored St. James' Church certainly deserves a unique and beautiful surroundings," said Šauerová.

Polička was a royal town, and parts of its stone walls, which are among the best preserved in Central Europe, remain. The town was founded by King Přemysl Otakar II in 1265. The fortifications measure 1,220 meters and have 19 towers. Polička also boasts a baroque town hall and a 22-meter-high plague column.
