Polička – The town of Polička in the Svitavy region is preparing to transform its historic central square, with plans for more trees, a statue of Bohuslav Martinů, and a fountain with a stream, said the town spokeswoman Naděžda Šauerová in a press release. If the town secures 20 to 25 million crowns, construction could begin next year.

The city council commissioned an architectural study from Přemysl Kokeš and Zuzana Ambrožová. According to them, Polička's location and elevation resemble the Acropolis in Athens. "We want to create a space where local residents will enjoy spending time and feel good," said Kokeš.

The proposal includes 33 trees, an amphitheater, places for picnicking or cultural events, and a fountain. Water from the fountain is planned to flow into a stream all the way to Riegrova Street. The water evokes one of the most famous works of Bohuslav Martinů, The Opening of the Springs. The composer will be depicted as a young boy running home with his violin, having lived in the tower of St. Jacob's Church.

The square in the former royal town is square-shaped. There is a baroque town hall and a plague column, and the area is a municipal heritage zone, with St. Jacob's Church nearby. The historic core is surrounded by stone walls, which are among the best-preserved in Central Europe. They measure 1,220 meters and have 19 bastions.

The town will undertake the reconstruction of the paved square according to its capabilities. For example, it needs to repair Eimova Street. The estimated costs for the transformation of the square are 20 to 25 million crowns. Construction work could begin next year or the year after.
