Přerov - The Přerov City Hall will commission a study that maps old industrial areas suitable for regeneration and further use, so-called brownfields, within the city. The reason for this is the possibility of obtaining European funds, which could help property owners attract new investors, for example. This was stated to journalists today by the Deputy Mayor of Přerov, Elena Grambličková (ODS). The town hall aims to have the study completed by March 2010. Brownfields are sites or areas left vacant after previous industrial or agricultural production, or even military areas. Their new use is often hindered by high revitalization costs, complicated property relations, or ecological burdens from previous production. "There are facilities in the city of Přerov that are unused or underutilized. This concerns primarily industrial properties, and this study should map them," the deputy mayor explained. Přerov, with a population of nearly 50,000, is a city with a very long industrial tradition. The city hall therefore assumes that it will be possible to find suitable places for revitalization. In cooperation with the owners, the city could then try to obtain funding for them if a relevant call from the Regional Operational Program is issued. The Přerov City Hall is not the only entity trying to map abandoned industrial areas and offer them to new investors. The Olomouc Region has also made a database of suitable business properties available on its website, and those interested in utilizing brownfields also have access to a list from the CzechInvest agency at www.brownfieldy.cz.
