OLOMOUC - The town hall in Šternberk in the Olomouc region has recently announced a competition for the building achievement of the year. The contest is intended for builders who completed the reconstruction of a house in the historic center of the city last year. The town hall leadership wants to motivate property owners to make repairs through this competition, said town hall spokesperson Irena Hamplová to ČTK.

According to her, buildings that are part of the urban heritage reserve or the protection zone in the vicinity of Šternberk Castle can participate. The town hall has announced the competition in two categories - minor building modifications of the object and total reconstruction. City officials will accept applications until February 16.
The winner will be decided by an expert jury. The best builder will receive a tangible gift at a ceremonial announcement of the competition in March, as well as a plaque documenting the victory in the competition, which they can place on the renovated house.
"We organized a similar competition ten years ago. The council decided to return to it because the city sold a large number of houses in the center last year. We want to encourage private owners to make repairs through this recognition," Hamplová stated.
The town hall is also working on the improvement of the city center itself. Last year, it launched an extensive project for the revitalization of the center. The initiative titled "The City of Šternberk - Changes Over Time" will cost about 90 million crowns. Most of the project's costs will be covered by the EU.
Competitions for builders are also being announced by several other cities in the region and the Olomouc Region Office.
