The Academic Senate of the AVU, in accordance with the Higher Education Act and the Rules of Procedure of the Academic Senate of the Academy of Art in Prague, elected a candidate for the position of rector for the period 2025–2029 at its regular meeting on March 5, 2025. The elected candidate is art historian prof. Mgr. Tomáš Pospiszyl, Ph.D., who will take over the leadership of the oldest art school in the Czech lands focused on fine arts, architecture, and restoration on March 24, 2025.
“The Academy of Art in Prague has traditionally educated the most significant figures in Czech art. Its future is being shaped here. However, as a guarantor and indicator of artistic values, the AVU should serve the entire society. In the coming years, the school is set for modernization and strengthening international relations. We must focus on the quality of teaching and better ensuring its operation. Without sending students abroad and without guest professors, the AVU would inevitably fall into provincialism.” Tomáš Pospiszyl
In addition to Pospiszyl, the votes of the Academic Senate of the AVU were also sought by Mgr. Marek Pokorný, director of the city gallery of contemporary art PLATO Ostrava, and prof. Mgr. Art Dušan Zahoranský, head teacher of the Intermedia 2 studio at the AVU. The winning candidate was chosen by the Academic Senate, which consists of 17 members from the academic community, including students. To be elected, the candidate for the position of rector had to receive a majority of the votes. The vote for the position of rector can take up to three rounds. Tomáš Pospiszyl was elected in the first round.
