Kladno - The architectural competition for the transformation of the Central Bohemian Library in Kladno was won by the proposal of Marek and Magdaléna Svobodová from Atelier Akorát. The jury appreciated the sensitive yet distinctive approach to the historic monument in the winning design, the library's spokesperson Jitka Hrušková informed today in a press release. The library is set for reconstruction, with costs estimated at 255 million crowns excluding VAT. The library management announced the competition with the aim of operationally unifying the fragmented area, addressing long-term limited spatial possibilities, and offering visitors and employees new capacities, services, and a better environment.
A total of 23 architectural teams applied for the competition. "The architectural competition confirmed that even a historic building can take on a contemporary and confident form without losing its character. The winning design sensitively engages with the value of the place while also introducing new functions that will elevate the library towards a modern center for education, culture, and community gatherings," said Václav Švenda (Allies), the regional councilor for culture. He believes that the transformation of the area will significantly contribute to the further development of cultural life in Kladno and the entire region.
The architects' proposal includes a significant expansion of the freely accessible collection, which can be rearranged for larger cultural events, as well as the creation of a café, a so-called multisensory room for relaxation, creative spaces including a sound studio, and other areas. "From our perspective, it is essential that the proposal addresses the main operational problems we see today, retains the genius loci of the place, and remains sufficiently flexible in case the library's needs change significantly in the future," added the library director Roman Hájek.
The library is located in the former District House, built in 1910 according to the design by architects Josef Mařík and Karel Šidlík, which is a cultural monument. It provides public library and information services as the regional library of the Central Bohemian Region. Through it, people can borrow both traditional and electronic documents. It also offers training for librarians, book loans from the exchange fund, and methodological assistance to municipal libraries in the Central Bohemian Region.
