“The economic crisis of 2008 is a historical milestone in the development of experimental architecture. The previous two decades, referred to by architectural historian Mario Carpo as the "Digital Turn," reflected an era of deep belief in digital architecture. However, the crisis sparked a backlash against digital design, suddenly associated with the failings of the global economy and the irresponsibility of neoliberal politics. Universities suspended digital architecture programs, curators sought other areas of interest, and exhibitions focused on other artistic disciplines. A new generation of students and recent graduates from digitally oriented master's programs found themselves in a radically different post-crisis world. Today, ten years later, several new streams and directions have emerged that reflect two full decades of research in the field of digital design. Among these trends is the notion of “humble elegance” (austerity-chic), architect Alejandro Zaera Polo's Italian “Tendenza 2.0” by Pier-Vittorio Aureli, and Dogma and Office. At the same time, the term "post-digital" presents a viewpoint in which "digital" is no longer perceived as a novelty but becomes part of everyday life. In response to this, another group of young creators identifies themselves as “Discrete.” They argue that society was never digital, and that the current idea of a post-digital world is thus a fabrication and incorrect. The last decade has given rise to a new extensive scene, where various reactions to the “digital turn” appear. These contemporary stances are critical, dismissive, yet also celebratory. But are they merely stylized poses? Are they really critical? The 2019 Biennale of Experimental Architecture will attempt to define some of these contemporary currents and uncover the complexity and desire to challenge established traditions.”
