Brno - The equestrian statue of Jošt of Luxembourg will be placed in Moravské náměstí in the center of Brno starting this weekend. Lucie Rónová, the project coordinator, told ČTK today. The work by painter and sculptor Jaroslav Róna is eight meters tall, from the pavement to the tip of the spear, and weighs more than four tons, costing nearly seven million crowns. The bronze-cast statue will symbolize Courage. It will complement the already existing three allegorical elements based on Plato, which are Justice, Moderation, and Prudence.

The statue will be located in the space in front of the Church of St. Thomas, where Jošt is buried. On Saturday, it is expected to be transported to Moravia from Prague, where Róna has been working on it for nearly three years. The piece will be divided into several parts, which will be assembled together only on-site in front of the church. According to Rónová, a crane will be needed for placing the statue in its designated spot.
According to Pavel Žára, spokesperson for the Brno city hall, the statue of Jošt will be the fourth piece representing the four virtues according to Plato. "It will represent Courage. There are three other works in the square. The fountain with a stone border represents Moderation, the model of the city map of Brno symbolizes Prudence, and the statue with a cube in front of the Supreme Administrative Court is Justice," Žára listed.
Jošt of Luxembourg lived from 1351 to 1411. According to historians, he was one of the greatest politicians born in Moravia. He was the Margrave of Moravia and later also the Roman King. During his rule, he restored the mint in Brno and was known for his learnedness and erudition. He was said to have changed sides and opinions to achieve his goals. There is already one statue of Jošt in today's Moravské náměstí, located a few dozen meters from where the new one will be. The former Margrave of Moravia is depicted in stone, supporting the entrance to the former governor's building.
